battery not user replaceable
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
The 760 is great, but I do not like that my battery after 2 years only holds a charge for 10-15 minutes now and it is not user replaceable and costs $99 to have it shipped to Garmin to have it fixed even if I just want the battery replaced.
There are very few models that have user replaceable batteries such as the 8xx series which is more expensive, but I do not need voice recognition and they do not come with lifetime traffic included.

Make sure you know the update policy from Garmin before you plunk down your money for this. They say you get 1 update. You will need to get this done. Don’t wait for a better map, they have no interest in giving you a better map or the best map available at the time. If you don’t hop on it, your offer expires and then, you are out of luck.
At that point, my recommdation is to not buy anything from them as far as map updates go and just get one off the internet that will work just fine and is free.
Garmin Nuvi 760
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I purchased this Garmin 760 4.3 inch GPS Navigator in August after borrowing a different model for a cross country road trip, which hooked us on the whole auto navigation concept. I chose the 760 based on other ratings, because it provided many of the features I wanted and the price was right. I have never used other brands, so I don’t have any comparisons. The only minor complaints I have are some of the routes it chooses are not the most direct (specifically in Canada) and it is really slow to access the satellites in parts of the country (Northern California was the slowest). All in all, this is a handy tool to help navigate in areas you aren’t familiar with…beats trying to read a map at night. It IS good to have a map with you as backup, though.
Nuvi 760 Does Everything I Need- Durable, Reliable!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I purchased this over 18 months ago and it’s still working as well as the first day I used it. Amazing product that I’ve used driving throughout North America for vacations and routine travel. I use the friction mount, and carry the Nuvi with me whenever I might need it. I really like the interface, the ease of use, and the durability of the product. Battery strength has been fine and is still the same. Here’s a rundown:
Pros:
- Durability and ease of use over time. Reliable and does exactly what it’s supposed to every time.
- This is SO MUCH BETTER than cell phone navigation! You don’t have to depend upon cell tower coverage, roaming, etc. The Nuvi will work EVERY TIME with satellite reception, and it won’t skip a beat with a trip through the mountains or into the country. Plus you don’t have to pay monthly fees…
- Screen quality and brightness is excellent. I love how it transitions automatically to the night screen at dusk.
- Bluetooth and MP3 player sound is actually very good. FM Transmitter is really nice for longer trips, especially where radio stations are sparse. Many newer models do not have this feature. I loaded a 4 gig sd card with mp3 files, and this thing will play for house through the vehicle’s radio. In cities the FM transmitter doesn’t work very well with all the other broadcast stations however.
- Routing is a great tool with this model when you need or want it.
- Ease of use and POI database. Love having information at my fingertips wherever I might be. I even added a Campground directory to the POI database that increased the functionality. The author of the campground database didn’t have the most accurate information at times, but it allowed instant navigation to a host of campgrounds listed by State.
- Voice guided directions with Street names are much more helpful than simply saying “Turn left”
- Point of Interest (POI) database is amazing in how many places there are in a given area. I was on a trip with my son and while eating breakfast I was browsing the POI’s… we found a couple places just minutes away that I would never have known about, and that were the highlight of our trip- actually with memories that will last a lifetime. Thanks Garmin!
- Map upgrade would be expensive if you bought a new one every year, but is now easier with the NuMaps Lifetime, etc. Even with an older map I haven’t found any real limitations as yet.
Cons:
- Time zone switching is not automatic on this model as it is with newer models. When you cross a time zone, you must change that time zone using the Nuvi’s settings page. Slightly annoying, but not a big deal.
- Speaker for bluetooth and mp3 can sound “tinny” at times.
- Voices used for directions are limited. The American English female voice for example is a bit hawkish and nagging from my perspective… sounding annoyed at times and getting old, especially when saying “Recalculating…” Had to turn that one off! There should be an easier way to upgrade voices (maybe I don’t know about it).
- Point of Interest database isn’t always accurate. Took me to a gas station and restaurant that just wasn’t there at one point. In the middle of a host of others, but I had to wonder about that. There should be an easy way to provide feedback for places that are not accurate… I understand the newest Nuvis will come with internet connectivity- that will make a huge difference for real-time updates for gas stations, prices, weather, etc.
Overall I’m very pleased with this product- it has worked much better than I thought it would, and I would NEVER be without GPS in my car again. Heck, I’ve even taken it on the train and airplanes- still works! One time I left it in pedestrian mode and couldn’t figure out why it was trying to “update map” so much in the car… finally figured that out! I hope the battery will last a few years more because I really like this model. For the price, these just can’t be beat. Good luck!
Great Nuvi – some misgivings
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I had an earlier Nuvi and loved it for ease of use. This new unit is a great upgrade. I like the traffic service, although I am still thinking about paying for this once the free period expires (only works in certain metro areas).
I was disappointed to learn that pairing with bluetooth devices is next to impossible, because of the use of a non-standard fixed passcode (why not use “0000″ like everything else?). If this is not a big deal to you, this is a great unit. If that is important, other models (like the super-expensive Zumo 660) may be the way to go.
lousy product & no sense of customer support

My prior unit was a Tom Tom which was stolen. This unit has never worked properly. I spent hours trying to have it “fixed” per customer service with new software, all to no avail. It takes 5-10 minutes to find a satellite and loses reception easily where my old Tom Tom found the satellite instantly and rarely lost reception. When customer service finally did agree I could have it serviced – under warranty, I had to pay for Fedex. I’ll NEVER buy another Garmin product again. Rotten firm, rotten product, rotten service.
Best GPS that I have had!

Not Lost Now

After being with someone who had GPS on their phone, I trying out a Nuvi in a rental car on my next trip. I was blown away with how easy it was to use (no instructions on use from rental place). I decided then that I was buying one for myself. I’ve used in on a dozen trips in the last 5 months and even some around my home town (small city) I am now in the process of buying more for family and friends for Xmas presents. I loved the real time traffic updates which I didn’t know was activated till I was trying to get around Atlanta in rush hour traffic. It helped us find dinner in the middle of nowhere and even my technically challenged brother was able to get home from the family reunion without taking the interstate (12 hour x5 states). I love that it has bluetooth, but at times I have problems hearing my caller clearly. I uploaded songs to it for the back roads in the rental van (just am/fm) and really have no major complaints. The best part is the flexibility I have had in being able to use it any vehicle I am in.
Has it’s own problems
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I had nuvi 360 from before. I liked it, except for it’s confusion at overpasses and tunnels. When I was going on some freeways in the city, it thinks I am going on the regular road and tells me to take a left or right. It didn’t know where I was. I thought 760 would be better. It looks good. Maps are clearer. But, here are the problems. I was on the freeway in heavy traffic, just following the directions, and it froze. I couldn’t restart it. It didn’t shutdown even when I pulled the plug. I had to hold the off key(.. to the left) for a while to shut it down to restart it again. Other problem is, it loses voice setting most of the time. I have to go to the settings again to select voice. Sometimes it doesn’t have the option to select it. I have to restart it. Sometimes it takes for ever to load the maps. When that happens, I am not sure if it’s still loading maps or if it froze. I restart it, and it goes to the main screen, but this time also I don’t see voice setting. I have to restart again to select voice. Suction pad of this one is better. It has traffic avoidance for free for the first three months. I wonder if it’s delaying my commute because it diverts from the freeway traffic, but I am not sure if it considers the delay because of traffic lights in the streets. I took the diversion and had to wait for ever at the traffic lights in local streets. Each 100 yards was taking 3 or 4 minutes. I had to spend about 30 minutes for a mile, and then it took me back to the original freeway, where the traffic flow was much better than in the street. I feel Nuvi 360 is better, and much cheaper. I trusted high rating by other customers, and now I am disappointed with the product and the previous ratings.
Direction Impaired

My wife and I took a cross country trip to Ohio and without the Nuvi we would more then likely still be trying to get there . Everything works as reviews said .The only thing that might be a plus would be more printed instructions . What comes with the Nuvi is fine for getting started but it has some many more apps that we found by trial and error , but maybe that adds to it . Would purchase another one positively .
