Love the Garmin
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
After having my Garmin for 3 yrs., it was stolen and I was at a loss. I only had positive things to say about every aspect and loved the Garmin. I choose to upgrade from the model that I had and so far am very happy with the new Garmin. I have not had one problem so far and everything has worked as expected. I would recommend this Garmin to eveyone.

Unit couldn;t find itself
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
The main problem with my Garmin Nuvi 780 is that it never knew where it was. It showed it's location as about 200 yards from where it really was. As a result, it could not take me to a specific address. Rather it protested when I tried to turn into the driveway of the destination address I had entered. It showed that my car was across the highway 2 blocks from where I was parked & on a side street, so it gave me erroneous directions on which way to go from that spot. Once when I found my way to the correct Interstate in spite of the Nuvi's directions, it repeatedly told me to turn off at the next exit. This continued for 10 miles until I turned it off. I eventually phoned Garmin & they were very nice. They had me update the software & do a "hard reset", but neither of those helped. I finally returned the unit & am looking for a different model.

Garmin 780 is great - almost
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I have found the Garmin 780 to be a great GPS - almost. I have 2 problems that are not a big deal but annoying just the same. Seems the GPS has a problem with north-south-east-west when it come to getting onto Interstates. The GPS tells me to take I-380 east when the road sign says I-380 north or south. This has happened on several occasions with different interstates. Second, the GPS seems to take different routes going to a location and then coming back to the same place. One longer than the other.

Nuvi 780 is feature packed GPS and EXCELLENT value compared to StreetPilot C580
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have now owned my nuvi 780 for about 2 months and love it. Previously I owned a Garmin StreetPilot C580 which was a nice basic GPS, but I like the many features on the nuvi 780 better. I recently sold my C580 to a friend for most of what I paid for it at the time I purchased it nine months ago. Nine months ago, the c580 was a discontinued (and discounted) model and the nuvi 780 was Garmin's top model selling for hundreds more. Today the nuvi 780 is also discontinued, and selling for less than $50 more than I paid for my C580. The nuvi 780 has almost too many features which I like to try to cover in a short review. It seems like every day I learn somthing new about the 780 that I like. Just today I "discovered" the "trip information" feature. This allows you to view a LARGE speedometer and a compass plus things like average speed, time while moving, time stopped, max speed, etc. since the last time the trip info was reset. This info is available at any time, whether your navigating to a destination or just looking at the GPS map. I also like and make frequent use of the Transmitter feature, which I find far more useful than you may gather from other revues. This allows getting driving directions over the FM radio instead of the GPS speaker. You have to find a "dead" spot on the FM radio and tune the nuvi 780 transmitter to the same frequency. I find that from day to day that the "dead spot" FM frequency may change, but I always seem to be able to find a frequency on which the GPS transmitter will work. The one area where the C580 was superior was in audio volume. The C580 had two large speakers (the nuvi 780 has only one smaller speaker), and the C580 had a physical volume control in addition to the programmable volume control the 780 has. If I set the 780 proggrammable volume to 100%, it is still not as loud as the C580 at max volume, but it can be heard clearly even with the car radio playing. Also, using the nuvi 780 transmitter to broadcast GPS instructions over the FM radio speakers, the sound than beats the C580 for volume and clarity. I like the 4.3" diagnol screen on the 780 which is 70% larger than the screen on my old C580. This makes pressing soft keys on the screen easier and allows seeing more of the surrounding terrain. I particularly like the cradle which the 780 attaches to. This allows installing or removing the GPS without removing or insrting any cables since all cables (power, GPS cable, etc.) connect to the cradle, not the GPS. Finally, the nuvi 780 seems a little solider design than the C580 was. With the C580, I occasionally (onece every 50 power ONs) found that with the GPS power plugged into the car cigaret lighter, when the car ignition was turned on, the GPS would not turn ON. To turn the GPS on, it was necessary to turn the car ignition off and then back on again. I've never seen this on the nuvi 780. I also like the fact that the 780 has a "walking" mode which the C580 did not have. On one occasion I was able to use the 780 to locate my car in a large parking lot. The 780 "where am I" feature allows quickly locating a police station or hospital near where you are, which would be very useful in an emergency. Overall I am very satisfied with the nuvi 780 and highly recommend it.

Travel in the West
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I bought the Garmin nuvi 780 in anticipation of a trip to Denver for a relocation that I was doing. I bought this model specifically because of its wide range of features. I really liked the ease of use. I didn't really need to spend much time to figure out how to make it work. It's very intuitive. I also really liked MSN Direct & especially its weather feature. My only disappointment with the unit was that its bluetooth function would not pair with my phone. I contacted Garmin & they said there wasn't anything they could do. So, if I were to do it over, I would check to make sure you have a phone model that will pair with any Garmin unit that says it has bluetooth capability. Also think twice about buying the additional power cords that are available. The MSN Direct only works with the cord supplied with the Garmin unit. If you buy the additional cords the only advantage is you can charge the unit off of AC outlet. I would not waste the $$$ again. I also bought the Clearview screen protector which I think is a good purchase since everything you want to do is touch screen so this offers additional protection. All in all it does not only what I want it to do but also has several neat features that really expand its capabilities.

works okay
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
basically works okay, my only beef is sometimes it takes sooooo long for device to get in sync with satellites, by the time it's ready to give me directions, i'm already at my destination.

Used in remote areas and worked great
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
We have an excellent navigation system in our car and purchased this Garmin strictly for traveling and use in rental vehicles. We recently used it for a trip to New Mexico and traveled from Albuquerque through Santa Fe and north to Durango, Colorado. We visited many remote areas and found that the maps were extremely reliable. The database seemed to be up-to-date and was useful for researching places to stop for gas or grab a bite to eat. It was VERY user friendly and it captures the satellites a little better than some of the other portables that we have used (but not nearly as good as the built-in navigation system in our Acura; however, we don't expect that from any portable GPS device like Garmin). We had a bit of trouble activating the MSN service and were told by customer service that parts of Brooklyn, NY, have gaps in the broadcast service. It took a while but finally connected and activated and we haven't had a problem since then. Overall, we give it 5 stars because it completely lives up to expectations and is very easy to use.
