My first TomTom the on/off switch was so flimsy it would turn the unit on by itself while it was sitting in the car or on a desk. TomTom finally replaced that one under warranty, but the reconditioned repair they sent runs out of battery power after 45 minutes without being plugged in. When turned off fully charged, the battery will be completely dead within a week WITHOUT the unit being turned on.

I called TomTom customer service, and their warranty department tells me they WILL NOT WARRANTY REPLACE a GPS unit that runs at least 30 minutes under battery power. Also, they told me it was normal for their GPS units to run the battery down within a week WHILE TURNED OFF, and will only replace it under warranty if the battery dies completely within 2-3 days while the unit is turned off.

To recap, TomTom warranty says a fully charged battery only lasts 30 minutes, and a fully charged battery will die after 2-3 days with the TomTom GPS TURNED OFF.

So, if you want to be like me and have a hundred dollar paperweight after purchasing it only 10 months ago, buy this GPS for yourself, or even as a gift! Otherwise, I would avoid this manufacturers products entirely.

Then, I am required to purchase a year's updates at $11.95/quarter. Not sure how but that totals $98. I add that cost to my replacement cost and I have a unit that costs more than a new unit which comes with current maps. I can make a one time purchase of an updated North American map for $89 but then later I would have to get into the quarter update retroactive deal. <br /> <br />Had the descriptive material stated that I would be spending $100 to get it current, I would have spent $50 more and gotten a new unit with a new warranty. <br /> <br />This does not take anything away from the functioning of a TomTom that is excellent. My only hesitation against a Garmin is that the Garmin is much easier to upload my list of POI's or my dealer base account list. However the 4.3" screen offsets that by a significant margin. <br /> <br />Bottom line? Compare to a new cost with current maps. How out of date can they be? The more I use it the more I like it. But it is like playing a musical instrument, you must practice with it. I like the way it: talks to you (and the male computer voice Dave you can download is much better than Susan that comes on it), can fix in realtime a map error, can create and save a route with waypoints (I read that few others do this), you can give addresses to it with your voice, you can create favorites and new POIs, play music and GPS voice to FM radio (added 2 gig SD chip)music pauses for direction instructions, search POIs on route, updates route rapidly if you miss a turn. The map functions are really sophicisticated. You can easily search the map in 2d view with zoom functions and selected poi's and your own markers showing. Just for fun, in about 10 minutes I made a walking tour of monuments in DC and saved it as a route. If you are planning to go somewhere and you need to be there at a time, tell it and it will update you as to your ETA as you drive. It will also tell you what the speed limits are and warn you if you are speeding! If you are willing to pay extra it will track traffic and also gas prices. Plus it easily found my Palm phone and uploaded it's phonebook. It is an excellent hands free Bluetooth unit for the phone and easy to use. I really recommend this GPS. It is so much more than a GPS but is an excellent GPS as well. Oh and there is tons of addons to download at TomTOm Home. OH the referb comes with the 07 map. So I called TomTom Customer Support and complained about it being so old and they gave me the maps that are only one quarter old. Made me a happy camper. Only 12 bucks to get the most recent quarter. This unit is well worth the 119.00 price tag. OK one thing that Tomtom can improve, POI searching. There should be subgroups like for resturants, then subgroups like Italian, Mexican, BBQ, Burgers, etc. 720 grows on you with use.

Ok so my friends all have one. I know it sounds cliché but it’s true! Anyway I’ve had a chance to use them and play with them before I purchased this model. I FREAKING LOVE IT!
