Piece of junk, horrible warranty service
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
TomTom is without any doubt the WORSE GPS unit/ Customer service / Warranty service of ANY GPS manufacturer.

My first TomTom the on/off switch was so flimsy it would turn the unit on by itself while it was sitting in the car or on a desk. TomTom finally replaced that one under warranty, but the reconditioned repair they sent runs out of battery power after 45 minutes without being plugged in. When turned off fully charged, the battery will be completely dead within a week WITHOUT the unit being turned on.

I called TomTom customer service, and their warranty department tells me they WILL NOT WARRANTY REPLACE a GPS unit that runs at least 30 minutes under battery power. Also, they told me it was normal for their GPS units to run the battery down within a week WHILE TURNED OFF, and will only replace it under warranty if the battery dies completely within 2-3 days while the unit is turned off.

To recap, TomTom warranty says a fully charged battery only lasts 30 minutes, and a fully charged battery will die after 2-3 days with the TomTom GPS TURNED OFF.

So, if you want to be like me and have a hundred dollar paperweight after purchasing it only 10 months ago, buy this GPS for yourself, or even as a gift! Otherwise, I would avoid this manufacturers products entirely.

p.s. TomTom customer service, if you are reading this, my case number for the facts in this review is 091006-000350. I would not want anyone to think I was making any of this up.

Excellent Buy
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Purchased the Tom Tom 720 as refurbished. You would never know it was refurbished. Right out of box was in super condition and worked like a charm. Becaused I'd never purchased a refurbished item before I also bought the warranty that was offered. But, its too was a good buy. I certainly would recommend Amazon to any person seeking outstand prices and so far excellent products.

TomTom is Tops. Refurb is a disappointment with old maps
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
TomTom is Tops!! My 510 worked flawlessly for about two years. I chose to update the maps and the features by buying a refurbished 720. To my surprise the maps are "7 quarters" out of date (1 3/4 years). That is ok because I was going to purchase a map update at $9.95 / quarter. The zinger is that I must purchase 7 quarters to make the map current for $49. Then, I am required to purchase a year's updates at $11.95/quarter. Not sure how but that totals $98. I add that cost to my replacement cost and I have a unit that costs more than a new unit which comes with current maps. I can make a one time purchase of an updated North American map for $89 but then later I would have to get into the quarter update retroactive deal.

Had the descriptive material stated that I would be spending $100 to get it current, I would have spent $50 more and gotten a new unit with a new warranty.

This does not take anything away from the functioning of a TomTom that is excellent. My only hesitation against a Garmin is that the Garmin is much easier to upload my list of POI's or my dealer base account list. However the 4.3" screen offsets that by a significant margin.

Bottom line? Compare to a new cost with current maps. How out of date can they be? Not only new roads are corrected but errors of misplaced roads are corrected. Your call. This is my 2nd refurbished and I expect to get a 3rd in a couple of years and also get one for my son-in-law. Outdated maps can be offset by price and function.

What Have I DONE?
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Bought my TomTom 720 almost a month ago. It stopped working about 10 days ago. Customer service is really hard to understand and I believe I may have just lost my rather large investment (for my limited budget) to the wonderful folks at TomTom. My "refurbished" model must not have been "furbished" very well.

Refurbed Units Have Not Been Checked
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Amazon sent me three of these units and all three were malfunctioning. In all three cases I called TomTom and they confirmed the defect.

The first responded to ghost touches in the upper right corner of the screen. (You didn't have to actually touch it, it just thought it was being touched and responded to that.) If you keep pressing a spot in the upper right, the unit will eventually call the police. This is a rapid fire sequence of touches and very difficult to cancel. It called my local police 9 times before I could stop it.

The second had a problem in which when you press a key on the onscreen keyboard it would actually select the letter above or to the right of the one you pressed. I posted a video of that.

The third unit hard crashed every time I connected it to my computer. Only pressing the reset button with a paperclip would bring it back. It seemed to work correctly other than that.

Overall I liked the operation of the Go 720, but Amazon got ripped off by the company that supposedly refurbished these units. They just repackaged them and sent them out again without sufficient testing.

This review is for the refurbished 720
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
The device itself is great. But the refurbished model arrived set up with Dutch menus. If this happens to you click the wrench icon then the "more" arrow until you see a flags icon (takes about 5 clicks) then select your language of choice(the manual inexplicably doesn't offer this information). It also didn't include the software CD and tomtom doesn't honor their latest map guarantee on the refurb unit. The refurb unit also has a short 6 month warranty.

To sum this review up the unit itself is great. The refurb deal isn't, in light of the short warranty and old maps.

720 grows on you with use.
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
If you want a GPS that has lots of features and you are willing to climb the learning curve...this is a good choice for you. The more I use it the more I like it. But it is like playing a musical instrument, you must practice with it. I like the way it: talks to you (and the male computer voice Dave you can download is much better than Susan that comes on it), can fix in realtime a map error, can create and save a route with waypoints (I read that few others do this), you can give addresses to it with your voice, you can create favorites and new POIs, play music and GPS voice to FM radio (added 2 gig SD chip)music pauses for direction instructions, search POIs on route, updates route rapidly if you miss a turn. The map functions are really sophicisticated. You can easily search the map in 2d view with zoom functions and selected poi's and your own markers showing. Just for fun, in about 10 minutes I made a walking tour of monuments in DC and saved it as a route. If you are planning to go somewhere and you need to be there at a time, tell it and it will update you as to your ETA as you drive. It will also tell you what the speed limits are and warn you if you are speeding! If you are willing to pay extra it will track traffic and also gas prices. Plus it easily found my Palm phone and uploaded it's phonebook. It is an excellent hands free Bluetooth unit for the phone and easy to use. I really recommend this GPS. It is so much more than a GPS but is an excellent GPS as well. Oh and there is tons of addons to download at TomTOm Home. OH the referb comes with the 07 map. So I called TomTom Customer Support and complained about it being so old and they gave me the maps that are only one quarter old. Made me a happy camper. Only 12 bucks to get the most recent quarter. This unit is well worth the 119.00 price tag. OK one thing that Tomtom can improve, POI searching. There should be subgroups like for resturants, then subgroups like Italian, Mexican, BBQ, Burgers, etc.

I'm never lost!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Ok so my friends all have one. I know it sounds cliché but it's true! Anyway I've had a chance to use them and play with them before I purchased this model. I FREAKING LOVE IT! I bought it refurbished from TOMTOM, and so far so good! It's so easy to use, and it's very sleek, and handy. I just moved here from a different state and got sick and tired of getting lost. Now I never will get lost again! Thanks TOMTOM!

Bad Purchase
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I purchased this reconditioned product. I was not told it had out of date maps which Tom Tom wants 96.00 to bring up to date. This is a rip off and Amazon should be ashamed.
